چکیده

The ultra-compact imaging spectrometer is a miniature imaging spectrometer that has been designed for compatibility with operation in a Martian environment. The spectrometer can be mated to a variety of front optics, both telescopic and microscopic. With a miniature telescope, it can serve as a rover mast instrument that surveys the surrounding area from a distance of ∼1 m to infinity and produces full spectral data (500 to 2500 nm) of a wide panoramic scene in order to find the most mineralogically promising targets for further analysis and for directing subsequent rover activities. With a microscopic front lens, it can serve as an analytical tool for determining types of minerals in a rock and their spatial relations at a scale of tens of micrometers in order to make detailed interpretations of geological history. A realization of the instrument, adapted for operation in the Earth’s atmosphere, has been produced and tested both in the laboratory and in the field. The results prove the ability of the instrument to detect and map minerals of interest in both modes of operation. © 2014 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) [DOI: 10.1117/1.JRS.8.084988]

Microimaging Spectroscopy for the Exploration of Small Bodies: First Laboratory Measurements of Carbonaceous Chondrite and Hed Meteorites and a Proposed M6 Instrument for in Situ Measurement

Introduction: Analysis of mineralogy in geological samples typically requires the preparation of thin sections or preparation of powders for determination of crystal structure of chemical composition. Here we describe a new technique for petrology, i.e., simultaneous analysis of small-scale mineralogy and texture, using visible/shortwave infrared (VSWIR) imaging spectroscopy, that requires no s...

Time-resolved Raman spectroscopy for in situ planetary mineralogy.

Planetary mineralogy can be revealed through a variety of remote sensing and in situ investigations that precede any plans for eventual sample return. We briefly review those techniques and focus on the capabilities for on-surface in situ examination of Mars, Venus, the Moon, asteroids, and other bodies. Over the past decade, Raman spectroscopy has continued to develop as a prime candidate for ...

Characterizing the Bedrock Mineralogy of Dusty Regions of Mars Using Remote Sensing of Low Albedo

Introduction: Much of the Martian surface is obscured by dust. The bright and ubiquitous nature of this dust makes remote sensing spectral analysis of the underlying surface materials difficult or impossible. As a result, the composition and mineralogy of the substrate materials in large areas of Mars have yet to be characterized in detail. Still, even in the dustiest regions of Mars, small hol...

Superpixel segmentation for analysis of hyperspectral data sets, with application to Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars data, Moon Mineralogy Mapper data, and Ariadnes Chaos, Mars

[1] We present a semiautomated method to extract spectral end‐members from hyperspectral images. This method employs superpixels, which are spectrally homogeneous regions of spatially contiguous pixels. The superpixel segmentation is combined with an unsupervised end‐member extraction algorithm. Superpixel segmentation can complement per pixel classification techniques by reducing both scene‐sp...

Remote Pulsed–laser Raman Spectroscopy System for Mineral Analysis

Introduction: There is a need for an instrument that can be used for remote in situ identification of biogenic and a-biogenic minerals, various types of ices, organic materials etc. on planetary surfaces. The potential for measuring remoteRaman spectra of organic [1] and inorganic materials and minerals [2] with a small telescope and CW lasers have been demonstrated. Pulsed-laser Raman spectros...
